IMPORTANT
The selection of a lawyer is potentially very important to the outcome of your case. In a small
state like NH it's difficult to find a lawyer who only does one type of case. Many NH lawyers
are generalists, representing several different types of clients. Where possible though, try
to find a NH Lawyer that either specializes in your need or is a member of an industry association
specific to the practice area you need, like the American Academy of Matrimonial Lawyers or the
National Association of Consumer Bankruptcy Attorneys, etc.
Ask the NH Lawyer if he-she offers free consultations. In some practice specialties, they are
common, and others are not. If yes, then talk to two or three lawyers before selecting one. You may
also ask your attorney how many of these types of cases they have handled before.
Also, keep in mind that in most cases, fees charged by NH Lawyers are negotiable. Your attorney
runs a business - it just happens to be a law office. Whatever (s)he quotes you, feel free to make
a counter offer. If done tactfully, no NH Lawyer will object. Be careful though,
the cheapest lawyer isn't always the best.
To get an idea of how fellow attorneys rate each other,
consult Martindale-Hubbell and to interpret
the information see their explanation page.
